ATMORE, Ala. (WALA) – FOX10 News has confirmed Holman Prison in Atmore is on lockdown.
Officials say lockdown mode keeps prisoners in their cells after a disturbance on the grounds. No trips to the prison yard or visitors are allowed during that time.
Kristi Gates with the Alabama Department of Corrections said while a correctional officer was conducting a contraband search, an inmate attacked an officer over a cell phone. The officer suffered head injuries and had to get three stitches.
Gates says cell phones inside a prison can be dangerous.
“Contraband cell phones present a number of security issues. Today’s incident being just one example. This is why corrections officers are vigilant as possible in searching for contraband,” said Gates.
Gates said officers restored calm but will keep the prison on lockdown until officials deem necessary.
