Neighbors said they spoke to victim hours before she was murdered

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA ) – Mobile police are looking for the person or persons who killed 69 year old Shirley Gardner Wednesday, September 3.

According to Mobile Police spokesperson, Ashley Rains, Gardner was found stabbed to death at her home in the Bayou Plaza Apartments by a maintenance employee.

Just a few hours before she was killed, neighbors said they spoke with Gardner and waved to her from their front porches.

Jherrilyn Jenkins and her brother help their grandmother who lives near Gardner and said they can’t believe Gardner was murdered.

“They come to the door and said ‘we just found Mrs. Shirley with a bag over her head’. Before I can even compute what they said, detectives, police, crime scene tape. I’m thinking are you serious? This cannot be real,” Jenkins said.

Like so many others, Barbra Perry was also in disbelief.

She spoke with Gardner on the phone early Wednesday morning and was expecting Gardner to stop by her apartment.

“I never saw her. She never came,” Perry said. “It was so wrong to do her like that. It was wrong.”

For the community and the family, they’re still trying to understand why someone would want to hurt a woman they said was so kind and so loved.
