College football season kick-off packs fans into downtown Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) –  Hundreds of fans flocked to downtown Mobile to catch their favorite teams taking to the football field for another season of sporting excitement.

With both the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers playing their first games of the season at the same time Saturday afternoon, August 30, fans were excited to be able to catch both games at once.

“They’re still in our state, so unfortunately I’ll root for them again,” said Jennifer Waltman, an Alabama fan talking about the Auburn Tigers, “I don’t like to, but I will.”

“I think it’s an awesome atmosphere to just kind of feed off each other, everybody’s excited to be here, excited to be out and about,” said Auburn fan Jessica Parker.

Sports bars all along Dauphin street were packed with cheering fans for both teams.

FOX10 asked fans why they love to support the crimson and white, or orange and blue.

Everyone we spoke to told FOX10 it’s a family tradition.

“(It’s a) family thing, it’s just tradition you like roll tide,” said Adam Johnson, an Alabama fan.

“Well my daddy back here raised me right, I’ve been a crimson tide fan since I was five years old,” said Desiree McWhorter, as she cheered on the Tide with her family Saturday afternoon.

“It’s just my family tradition, half my family is Alabama, the other half is Auburn,” said Waltman, “family divided.”
