USA Children’s and Women’s: High volumes of children with respiratory illnesses

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – University of South Alabama Children’s & Women’s Hospital, as well as pediatric hospitals nationwide, are seeing high volumes of children with respiratory illness causing symptoms ranging from the common cold to wheezing and severe respiratory distress.

Normal wait times at USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital’s Evaluation Center (emergency department) have increased due to these cases.

Parents and caregivers should consider these recommendations from Dr. Jason Richerson, medical director of USA Children’s & Women’s Evaluation Center:

  • If your child has the symptoms of a common cold, treat the symptoms with over-the-counter medicine and seek advice from your pediatrician or primary care physician.
  • If your child experiences signs of respiratory distress, as in difficulty breathing or wheezing, or has a high fever that will not respond to over-the-counter medicines, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
