GREENVILLE, Ala. (AP) – Greenville police say they’ve arrested a man in the slaying of former University of Alabama football player Ozell Powell.
Chief Lonzo Ingram says 22-year-old Eric Simmons was arrested early Thursday in the killing of the 40-year-old Powell, who was from Greenville.
Powell was shot twice in the chest and died later at a hospital. Police say the killing happened an apartment complex, but they haven’t released further details.
Powell played at Alabama from 1993 through 1996. He started 25 games on the defensive line.
Powell was on the practice team for the NFL’s Washington Redskins in 1997 and 1998 and he signed with the Atlanta Falcons as a free agent in 2000.
Powell was later with the Birmingham franchise of the defunct XFL.
