Daphne makes safest cities list

DAPHNE, Ala. (WALA) – In a recent survey released by an independent security company, Daphne was named one of the top 15 cities in the state to live in and the only city in the southern half of the state to make the list. Safe Choice Security did a crime rate survey on 300 Alabama cities with the results based on violent crimes and property crimes.

Daphne, the Jubilee City, has a population of 22,000 and is less than 10 miles from downtown Mobile. The suburban city by the bay now, more than ever, has a reason to hold its chin high. The survey named Daphne the ninth safest city in the state with a crime index rating of 33.

Daphne was the only city from the southern half of Alabama to make the top 15. Police officials attribute much of it to the diligence of their patrol officers.

“They’re out there every day. We really push community policing. We’re really working with the community to help solve problems and our patrol officers are out there every day and I know they’re running, from the time they punch in to the time they punch out,” said Lt. Jud Beedy with Daphne Police.

The survey ranked the cities based on the number of violent crimes and property crimes per thousand people. When you look at the overall crime statistics in Daphne, Beedy said they back up what the survey indicated.

“Our crime statistics are down. We’re having less property crimes reported to us,” Beedy said. “We’re having less violent crimes reported to us, especially over the last two or three years. It is going down.”

While city officials are happy to have made the list, City Councilman Pat Rudicell, who’s also chairman of the Public Safety Committee, said it’s a reflection on many different departments.

“In addition to us funding the proper amount of fire, the proper amount of police officers and the proper amount of public works officers, we use the public works to make sure the roads, the fairways, the lights… everything contributes to the safety regarding firemen, police officers to get to the right place at the right time,” Rudicell said.

Officials say the citizens of Daphne also deserve credit for being active within their communities and reporting crime when they see it.

Topping off the safest cities list were three Birmingham suburbs – Helena, Mountain Brook and Vestavia Hills, all with similar populations to Daphne.
