4.5 million patients’ information exposed in hacker attack

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) – If you’ve been a patient at one of four hospitals in our area, your personal information has been exposed to hackers.

Hackers gained access to names, Social Security numbers, physical addresses, birthdays and telephone numbers of 4.5 million patients in 206 hospitals across the United states. These are all hospitals operated by Community Health Systems.

Here are the hospitals in our area:

  • South Baldwin Regional Medical Center in Foley
  • Santa Rosa Medical Center in Milton
  • North Okaloosa Medical Center in Crestview
  • Biloxi Regional Medical Center in Biloxi

The information that was exposed could allow someone to open bank accounts, get credit cards and take out loans.

Tyloria Crenshaw, the Branch Manager at the Mobile Better Business Bureau, says it’s important to be aware of your account activity, especially if your information is exposed.

“Just start watching your own account information and activity and look for any changes, sign up for fraud protection you might have through your bank or credit union and just be aware,” she said.

Community Health Systems says it plans to offer identity theft protection to all of the victims.
