PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) – Kenny Chesney fans lined up a couple hours before the Flora-Bama opened Wednesday, hoping to get their Flora-Bama-Jama wristbands early.
The free concert is this weekend, but you’ll only get in if you have the wristband.
The first fans started arriving at the Flora-Bama about 7:30 Wednesday morning.
When the doors opened about 9:00, the crowd had grown to about 150.
Scott and Tinsley Myrick of Orange Beach were the first people in line.
Scott Myrick said, “My wife had me up at 6:00, drinking coffee to get here by 7:30. We had to get here early. She’s a huge fan. Kenny, if you’re watching, call Tinsley Myrick.”
When asked why she wanted to get the Flora-Bama so early, Tinsley Myrick said, “Because I was here when we signed up for wristbands and the line was all the way back to Phoenix 10 (condominiums.)”
UP AT DAWN
In fact, a lot of people got out of their pajamas to get the Flora-Bama-Jama wristbands.
One person said she got up at 5 am to get to the Flora-Bama early.
Some fans rearranged plans.
When asked if she took off work to get here, Angela Parker of Brewton said, “Tonight I did.”
When the doors opened, some people stopped to buy t-shirts.
But the big prizes were the wristbands.
Flora-Bama Co-Owner John McInnis said, “Everybody’s happy. We just saw a firefighter from Chicago got his.”
On the beach itself, the stage is being built and large sprinklers are on hand to compact the sand.
But, if you haven’t made a reservation for the concert, Flora-Bama owners have some advice.
McInnis said, “If you don’t have a wristband, please, please, stay at home. Do not come to try to the event.”
ANXIOUS FOR WRISTBANDS
However, for those who got their wristbands, it should be a happy trip back home.
Just ask Allen McElroy, who’s wife, Dianne, was apparently very anxious to get her wristband.
McElroy said with a smile, “I live here in Orange Beach: drove over here with a nagging wife. That’s a long way.”
When asked what she had to say about that, McElroy’s wife Dianne said, “Hey, he’s got to go home with a nagging wife.”
Some 30,000 to 40,000 people are expected to be at the concert. Kenny Chesney announced the free concert in July. Fans were supposed to sign up for wristbands online, but so many people tried to sign up, the website crashed.
When everyone was able to get back online, too many RSVP emails were sent out.
Kenny Chesney didn’t want to disappoint his fans, so he worked with the Flora-Bama to make the concert bigger.
Picking up your wristband
If you reserved wristbands, you can get them starting Wednesday, August 13. Will Call will be at the Flora-Bama. The hours are 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, August 15. August 16, the day of the concert, it will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
Remember, every person in your party must be present to receive a wristband.
As you can imagine, the concert is having a big impact on the local economy. We’re told many of the condos and hotel rooms are filing up quickly.
