Getting kids ready for the new school year

MOBILE CO., Ala. (WALA)  – The countdown is on! The start of school is just days away. In fact, students in Mobile County Public Schools return to class on Thursday, August 7.

The first day of school can be stressful as children adjust to new routines, new teachers, and new classes. In some cases, children are dealing with a new school all together.

Parents can help make sure the first day gets off to a good start by being prepared.

MCPSS Parent Specialist, Paula Reese says “It’s important because on that first day of school, parents – you want your child to wake up smiling, happy. You don’t want any bumps in the road so that they can walk out of that door on the first day of school smiling, anxious and ready.”

Some other things to work on ahead of times include make sure your students have the correct uniform. For example, Williamson High School changed uniforms this year. Make sure your child is registered and up-to-date on any immunizations. Do you have all the right school supplies? You can find updated lists on school websites and in many stores. Make sure all those summer assignments are complete. And, it’s a good idea to practice the routes to school, know the carpools or bus procedures and the start time for your child’s school.
