Police: Pedestrian, using phone, stepped into traffic

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) – Gulf Shores police said a cell phone distraction had a lot to do with 35-year-old Eric Mansfield who was struck on Thursday and taken by Life Flight to Sacred Heart Medical Center.

“You’re starting to see people walking around looking at their phones while they’re walking beside the roadways. And we just always have to remember that it’s dangerous to be out on the side of the road and to be as careful as we can be,” Cpl. Josh Coleman said.

Police said because the 17-year-old driver was not at fault in this case, no criminal charges will be filed. Police just urge caution near the busy roads.

“It’s definitely something that people need to be aware of and keep in mind when they are near the roadways,” Coleman said.
