MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – It’s Alabama’s most popular tourist attraction, and now, the U.S.S. Alabama is getting a bit of a face lift ahead of an important anniversary.
The folks at the U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Park are getting ready to celebrate 50 years since the “Mighty A” was opened the public.
The ship measures 680 feet from stem to stern, and it’s getting a bit of a makeover.
Crews started re-painting the “Mighty A” its signature gunmetal gray Friday, August 1 and should be finished by the end of the year.
The U.S.S. Alabama Battleship Park is planning a big celebration on the 50th anniversary of the park opening.
Since January 9, 1965, more than 13 million visitors have walked her decks.
Just this year, USS Alabama Battleship Park was named Alabama’s attraction of the year.
