Fort Morgan officials say Governor Robert Bentley and his wife will attend the ceremonies at Fort Morgan that cap the weekend event of the 150th anniversary of “The Battle of Mobile Bay.”
Saturday, thousands of spectators surrounded the fort, and boaters watched from Mobile Bay, as reenactors on both sides of the conflict recreated the Civil War naval battle and Union siege of Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines.
The Union Navy was able to break Confederate lines to effectively stop Confederate blockade runners and Confederate ships from leaving the port of Mobile.
News of the historic battle also helped in the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln.
This afternoon, Governor Bentley will be present as the “Surrendering of the Colors” ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m.
