GULF SHORES, Ala. (WALA) – Paramedics lifeflighted a man from the Saltwater Pavilion at Gulf State Park after lifeguards pulled him from the water, Gulf Shores officials tell FOX10.

Orange Beach Safety supervisor Melvin Sheperd said the near-drowning took place Saturday afternoon. The medical assistance helicopter had to be brought in from Florida to transport the man to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola but he was breathing and able to speak so he’s expected to make a full recovery.

Shepard said the man was in the water with his family, who at first though he was joking. After he went under and didn’t surface, Sheperd said family members jumped into action to try and save him. Lifeguards responded after they were flagged down; they got the man out of the water and performed CPR.

Shepard said so many people stepped in to help, police had to do crowd control.
