One of the re-enactors at Dauphin Island’s Fort Gaines for the 150th commemoration of the Battle of Mobile Bay was there for a different reason than most.
For Whitney Hamilton, who grew up in Birmingham but now lives with her husband in Brooklyn, New York, the spectacle was also a movie set.
“I made a movie 10 yeas ago called ‘My Brother’s War’. We are down here again to finish making the sequel, ‘Union’,” Hamilton said.
” ‘Union’ is a double entendre. It’s about a woman who takes her dead brother’s identity in order to fight in the Civil War. There are over 400 women who fought disguised as men on both sides of the conflict,” she said.
