Police: reports of "strong chemical smell" led to response

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Mobile Police said a strong chemical smell led them to a hotel room at the Beverly Motel on Government Blvd. in which they found several suspects and a child.

Police spokesperson Terence Perkins said they arrested Jason McClinton, 33; John Avera, 42 and Amanda Black, 27 on Thursday, July 31. The Alabama Department of Human Resources turned the child over to his grandparents.

Police charged Black with chemical endangerment of a child, and also had a local warrant.

McClinton was charged with felony possession of drug precursor chemicals, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. Avera was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, felony possession of drug paraphernalia and had a county warrant.
