MCSO: Fundraiser for murder suspect ends in police raid

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – What started as a fundraiser to help a local murder suspect post bond, ended in a raid by three law enforcement agencies, and 15 arrests.

MCSO told FOX10 they aren’t sure exactly who the club was raising money for, but there was a lot more going on at the club than just fundraising.

Mobile County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) officials said 14 adults and one minor are facing charges Friday night, July 25, after a police raid at a local nightclub late Thursday night, July 24.

Sheriff’s officials said these arrests come after an extensive undercover sting operation of the club, called Suga’s, located on St. Stephen’s Road in Prichard.

Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Mobile Police, and officers from the U.S. Marshal’s Service conducted the raid.

Lori Myles with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said officers were able to confiscate some $4,000 in cash, eight handguns, one shotgun, $180 in counterfeit currency, 12 packs of spice, a quarter pound of marijuana, two gallons of codeine cough syrup, five sets of digital scales, cocaine, prescription drugs, and an assortment of ammunition for firearms.

“We actually had to go in with a search warrant, and to get a search warrant, you have to prove that drug activity is going on, so we did several undercover buys there, and then once we showed that to the district attorney’s office, we got the search warrant,” said Myles.

One witness, who wanted to remain anonymous, for fear of his safety, said the raid seemed like something out of a movie.

He, and several other witnesses, confirmed a helicopter even assisted in the raid with a spotlight.

“Around 12:15 a.m., I heard a helicopter, it woke me up, and I looked out the window, and I just seen a bunch of people running for their lives, and police everywhere, and it was out of control, I didn’t know what to think,” said the witness.

The witness told FOX10 he and other neighbors in the area are glad the sheriff’s office conducted the sting.

“People’s told me that they’ve called, reported, and nothing’s ever been done, so you know, it’s about time,” he said.

Sheriff’s officials said the owner of the club was not arrested last night in the raid, but charges are pending, and MCSO is looking to make even more arrests in the case.
