MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Officials broke ground Friday morning, July 25 on a new multi-million dollar shopping center coming to Mobile.
McGowin Park is being built off Satchel Paige Drive, near Hank Aaron Stadium.
The developer said the complex will feature several buildings on both sides of Satchel Paige Drive, which is just off Government Boulevard near I-65.
We have heard some of the stores coming are Costco, Petco, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Field and Stream, Hobby Lobby, Home Goods and Ashley Furniture.
Crews have spent the last couple of weeks clearing trees right across the street from our studios down to the Hollywood Theatre. Eventually the Satchel Paige Drive will be widened to accommodate the traffic.
“There will be a four lane road with roundabouts in there so there won’t be traffic signals to go through and we fully anticipate, based on the studies and due diligence that everybody’s done, it will flow very smoothly,” said City Engineer Nick Amberger.
The shopping center will also bring a lot the jobs into Mobile County Commissioner, Jerry Carl, says he hopes county residents get in on the jobs too.
“It will be a lot of jobs. It was first labeled as a lot of by the community as part-time jobs in reality it will be a lot of full-time jobs here. We have a lot of students that need some part-time jobs we are excited about looking after the students also,” said Carl.
