A 63-year-old grandmother spoke exclusively to FOX10 News after shooting a suspected burglar in her living room. The terrifying ordeal happened Friday on Thorr Avenue in Prichard.
Phyliss Law says this is the second time she’s been burglarized. She said during the last incident she had jewelry and electronics stolen.
we heard this crackling… Like wood popping and stuff. I said oh my god. He trying to come in. So I backed up to my room and got my gun and got my extra clip,” Law said.
She was hoping the suspect would go away. Instead, Law said he came closer.
“Next thing I know, he hit the lights and put all the lights on and I’m saying to myself, ‘This person been here before to know where all my lights at,’” she said. “This is ridiculous. He just comes strolling walking around. By the time…He was right here I saw the blue jogging basketball pants he was wearing. And when he got there I jumped up and just start shooting. I have no idea where I hit him. He fell right there on the floor there. “
Law’s granddaughter hid in a closet while she moved closer to the living room and got down on the ground.
Prichard police say she shot the suspect in the head.
Law fired two more shots towards the a-c unit where the suspect crawled inside.
Law knew she needed to go speak with officers, so she prepared to go outside.
“I put my clip out put it in my hand with the gun. I had my ID. I say I got to go out this door. When I went out I could hear them hollering, ‘Hands up! Hands up!’ and I was trying to tell them; they said, ‘No! Hands up! Get down!’ So I put my gun down on the deck. I dropped my ID on the deck, and I laid down on the deck they come up and they handcuffed me,” Law said.
Police eventually let her go.
Law boarded up her windows after the first burglary. Her home looks more like a fortress. She is fed up with the attacks…and wants to live in peace.
“They come in on peoples. When they coming in they coming in you don’t know what they have on them. A lot of them come in people’s house kill me take what they want and leave not here? No no they are not going to walk up in here. They did enough,” she said.
Law says she shot the suspected burglar with a 9 millimeter handgun. Prichard police say there was a second suspect involved and he was arrested near the scene.
They aren’t releasing details on the suspects, because they are “juveniles”.
The suspect did survive his wounds.
