OBFD: fire boat stopped more damage in late night blaze

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WALA) – Officials believe a late night fire at Bear Point Marina that destroyed two boats would’ve been much worse had it not been for a relatively new tool.

The Orange Beach Fire Department has only had their fire boat since December. They said the boat had been used a number of times during swimmer in distress calls and for dives, but this fire was the first time it had been used in a fire suppressing capacity.

Fire fighters told Fox10 News that if they hadn’t had the fire boat, the blaze may have caused significantly more damage.

“Coming into the marina to be able to put large amounts of water on the fire, quickly, access, that’s what made this instrumental over just a ground-based operation, which is what we normally,” J.R. Anderson, the fire boat operator, said.

OBFD said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
