MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Plenty of people in Mobile and around the country took time out Thursday to watch the World Cup match between the U.S. and Germany.
Some attended watch parties.
CHEERING THE RED, WHITE, AND BLUE
More than a 100 people people packed O’Daly’s Irish Pub in downtown Mobile chanting, singing, and showing off their colors in different ways.
Some wore red, white, and blue clothes.
Debbie Granger of Mobile said, “I am so proud that I’m wearing a red, white, and blue tutu all day long, and I have my stars and stripes on my face.”
Trey Thomas was dressed like a boxer, and said he was taking after “Apollo Creed from ‘Rocky,’ sporting my USA gear.”
Jamey Ward had a Captain America-type shield put on his shaved head with makeup.
OFF OF WORK?
And, where did the people come from?
When asked if her boss knew she was here, Jazmine Joswell said, “Oh, yeah, she does. She supported it. On my ‘off’ form, I put “USA, America.”
When the game started, there were some things to cheer about.
But, Germany scored a goal right after halftime, and the waiting began.
U.S. ADVANCES: REACTION
By the end of the game, fans learned the United States would advance to the knockout round because Portugal beat Ghana, and the cheering resumed.
Among the reactions:
“I don’t know what to say. We won, man. Alright, wait, we lost, but, we got to the next round. I’m excited.”
“I am so excited that we’re advancing. That’s all the matters.”
“I’m too excited right now. Honestly, I’m happy we’re moving on.”
“Now, I’ve got to shave a Mohawk because of a bet I made.”
The United States is scheduled to play again Tuesday.
