SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WALA) – Officials said a deadly overnight crash claimed the life of a 15-year-old in Spanish Fort and sent at least two others to the hospital. Fire-Rescue officials told FOX10 News that
the accident happened on Buzbee Road near Sibley Creek Road around 2 a.m. Wednesday
morning, June 25, 2014.
Alabama State Troopers say the victim is Keri Gray of Spanish Fort. In their
statement, Troopers said Gray was a passenger in a single vehicle accident and was killed
when the car left the road and overturned. They say she was not wearing a seat belt.
Friends of Gray’s who were at the accident scene later Wednesday morning said it happened
only a hundred yards or so from her home.
“I mean, everyone knew her. It was just…no one saw it coming like this,” said Sam
“She was a really good friend at school. She would always call me and ask me about giving
her a ride and I just feel very badly that this happened to her,” added Alex Simms.
Friends and classmates of Gray said she will be deeply missed. Kenneth Sutton was one of
those gathered at the crash site. He lives right across the street from the accident and
was first on the scene just after 2 a.m.
“All of a sudden I hear a car screech around the corner. I hear a bunch of crashing sound
and I look out the window and the car’s just sitting here and I run out here and I did my
best to help,” Sutton recalled.
Alabama State Troopers responded along with Spanish Fort Fire-Rescue. Marks in the road
clearly show where the vehicle left the pavement in the middle of a curve, rolling it over.
Life-flight had to be called in for others in the car.
“USA is our level one trauma center that’s in Mobile, but they have been on diversion.
They’re not accepting patients so that might have been an indicator or a determiner of
where they’re sent because these individuals were actually flown to Pensacola,” explained
Spanish Fort Fire Chief, Roger Few.
Gray’s friends don’t know what led up to that moment when the car ran off the road. They
just know they miss her.
Names and conditions of the other passengers in the car have not been released at this time
and the accident is still under investigation.
