Mobile police are investigating another homicide in an area that’s been rocked with violence in recent months. The latest victim was just 19 years old.
Brenda Populus drove her grandson to work Thursday. That was the last time she saw him. The next night she received a call from another family member that she said didn’t seem to make sense.
“I could hear this noise, but I couldn’t understand what she was saying. She kept saying ‘grandmama, Dave’s gone.’ But he was off that day so I said gone where? She said grandmama he gone. I said gone where? And she said Dave is dead,” Populus said.
19-year-old Dave Populus was shot and killed on Ridge Street late Friday. Mobile Police were called about 9:15. They say Populus was already dead when officers and emergency crews arrived on the scene.
“I don’t really know anything about what happened to cause this to happen. I really don’t know. As a matter of fact, none of us do right now,” the grandmother said.
The shooting comes just a month after 20-year-old Hasaan Johnson was shot on Webb Avenue. Other shootings and an arson fire followed. Last week Chicago police arrested Derrick Davis on a separate charge. He’ll be brought back to Mobile to face a murder charge in Johnson’s death.
Populus graduated from Williamson High School last spring. His grandmother says he planned to go to college.
“This is something you wouldn’t expect to have happened to him. That’s why it’s so hard. He was planning to go back to school this fall too,” she said.
Instead, Populus is the latest victim in a wave of violence in an area police have been targeting for months.
Family members said Populus was the father of a seven month old son.
