GRAND BAY, Ala. (WALA) – A Grand Bay family is without a home this weekend after a fire destroyed it Friday. It happened off Burlington Drive. FOX10 News visited the home and the family that nearly lost everything they had on Sunday, June 22.
The inside of Peter Breland’s home used to be warm and comfortable. Now, all that is left are ashes and burnt memories – gone – up in flames.
“It’s an experience I’ve never had to go through and I hope no one has to ever go through this. I guess it’s just God’s test to see how tough we are. Was on our way back home and all of a sudden we seen a lot of smoke when we came down our road. When I got closer, I noticed my house was engulfed in flames,” said Peter.
Breland said his family has lived in the home for 12 years. During those years, Breland converted much of the house to make it accessible for his 29-year-old son, Jonathan, who has cerebral palsy.
“My first focus was my son to find out where my son was, what’s going on and hoping to God he wasn’t inside the house,” said Peter.
But his son was inside.
“He managed to get out of the home. Thank God, I seen him over there with some people when I pulled up and he’s fine,” said Peter.
“I got my walker and tried the best of my ability to make it out the French doors and I made it outside and called 911,” said Jonathan.
Jonathan said the fire department responded quickly to his home.
“A lot of times you don’t think it’ll happen to you. But bad things happen to everybody. You gotta thank God for everything you got. That’s why I smile because God he’s taken care of me. Even though bad things happen, you’ve got to believe,” said Jonathan.
Jonathan had spent the last five years in the process of writing a book entitled ‘Souling Tall.’ He said everything was lost in the fire. For a link to the Facebook page, click here.
The family has been staying in a motel for the past three days. That is being paid for by the Red Cross.
The extended family members are going to set up an account to help with expenses. When FOX10 News has more information, it will be provided.
