Detroit Lion’s defensive tackle Nick Fairley, held his FREE Lion Heart Football & Cheerleading Camp at Williamson High School in Mobile.
A Mobile native, Nick Fairley, quickly emerged as a defensive force in the NFL during his time with the Detroit Lions. Creating his legacy as an All- American and a 2011 first round draft pick, Fairley continues his Philanthropic efforts by hosting the 2nd annual Lion Heart Charity Weekend. The weekend of events took place June 20 and 21, 2014.
Fairley said he holds the camp’s location near and dear because it’s a part of him and it is where he grew up. “I was a Craighead Elementary lion, a Williamson Lion and now I am a Detroit Lion.” “It really just feels good to come back because this is where I gave my blood, sweat and tears when I was in school and so it’s just right for me to give back.”
Something for girls too!
The University of South Alabama Cheerleaders helped local girls learn a variety of cheer techniques and drills. The girls were divided into age groups and taught skills ranging from beginners to advanced. “It was very important to include young girls, and I have nieces, and they told me they wanted to be involved and have something to do, so it was very important for me to have something for young girls as well,” Fairley said.
“My vision is to see true interaction among the players and youth that they can use on and off the field,” Fairley said.
In its second year, Fairley’s FREE Lion Heart Football & Cheerleading Camp focuses on servicing inner city youth that have a true passion for sports but very limited resources. Over 250 youth attended Saturday’s event.
In addition to the free camp, Fairley made another financial donation to his Alma Mater Williamson High School as well as Mobile Parks & Recreation.
