American flag ripped to shreds at west Mobile restaurant

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – A west Mobile restaurant claims to be victim to a disgraceful crime, Tuesday, June 17.

FOX10 News received a call Tuesday afternoon from Alex Fayed, the owner of the Roma Café on Airport Blvd. He said the unthinkable happened at his restaurant – his American flag was purposely shredded and cut into pieces. Now, he is looking for action from the Mobile Police Department to catch the bad guys.

Fayad said he comes in every morning to prepare food for the day. But Tuesday morning, he did not expect to see his American flag cut into pieces on the back stoop of his restaurant.

“We have a big American flag in the back. I see somebody use a knife or scissor and cut the flag! Into little piece. Why? This American flag! I’m an American. Why you do that? Who are you? You live in the land of America and you throw the flag of America? That’s not fair,” said Fayad.

Fayad is an American, and has been so for the past 18 years. He feels passionately about his business, customers, and most importantly the country that gave him every opportunity to succeed in life.

“Seriously that’s bad,” said Fayad. “This is the best country in the world. I am an American. They give you the chance to grow up. So, if you’re born in America, you should be proud of your country. Don’t throw this away and put on the floor. You have to raise it!”

FOX10 News took a look at what was left of the flag – tethered and torn, as if it flew for years. Instead, it was desecrated by vandals.

“This my country. This my country. American hug me. This my restaurant. I wish he hear us. I will raise a lot of American flag here…higher over there. Doesn’t matter how much it cost me. I will do it,” said Fayad.

Fayad said he did reach out to MPD and file the report Tuesday morning. He hopes whoever committed the crime will be caught. If you know anything about this crime, you are asked to call the Mobile Police Department.
