MOBILE, Ala. – Three suspects were denied youthful offender status in Mobile Circuit court Wednesday.
DeAngelo Smith, Carlos Nottingham, and Yasmine Munnerlyn are charged with the attempted murder of a elderly Chickasaw man who was severely beaten and stabbed in his home in January.
Investigators said the trio stole a television from 86-year-old Carroll Jordan. Jordan died several days later in the hospital. District Attorney Ashley Rich wanted to upgrade the charges against the trio to murder, or even capital murder. However, Rich said evidence from doctors indicated Jordan may have died from other health issues not relating to the attack.
Judge Ben Brooks denied the request for youthful offender status which carries a maximum sentence of only three years.
The three will appear in court again on August 6th. That’s when the judge will set a date for the attempted murder trial.
