It’s not an event Brain Jones ever wants to go through again. Having a gun pointed at his head.
“Every move I made, he followed me with a gun,” Jones said.
He was working behind the counter at the Chevron gas station on Ziegler Boulevard when he said three men ran in, two armed with guns.
“I sat down to look at some paperwork and the next thing I know, in less than a second, I was looking at a gun. Told me to give them all my money or they’re going to shoot me. So I opened the register, set it down,” Jones said.
Jones said as quick as they came in, the robbers were gone. As they were leaving, Jones said they were laughing walking out the door. Mobile Police said from Chevron, the robber’s next stop was Waffle House on Dauphin Island Parkway. According to investigators, it’s the fifth Waffle House robbed in three months.
“They walk into the location armed (or they make it seem like they’re armed) get crash and then leave,” said Mobile Police Department spokesperson, Ashley Rains.
Police chase suspects in cars, on foot
Police caught up with the three suspects and chased them into Prichard. Officers said the suspects crashed the stolen vehicle they were driving and fled on foot through the woods and a swamp area. Police arrested two suspects: 19-year old Nelson Hayes and 18-year old Demetrius Locket. The third suspect got away on foot.
“They may go to a Waffle House and then rob two or three more and then go back to that location and rob it again,” Rains said. Police believe the suspects are part of an alleged robbery ring and there are more people on the street who haven’t been caught yet.
Based on how they acted at Chevron, Jones said it looked like the robbers knew exactly what they were doing.
“Only one talked, the tall one. They got the money then asked for cigarettes and told one of them to hurry up before he had to shoot me. Out the door they went,” Jones said.
He said the trio got away with less than $100 dollars. He’s just thankful to be alive.
Two of the three suspects were arrested. Nelson Hayes, 19, was arrested and charged with 12 counts of first degree robbery. Demetrius Lockett, 18, was charged with three counts of first degree robbery.
