Mobile-Tensaw River Delta considered hidden treasure

The 25,000-acres of tangled rivers and marshy swampland that comprise the Mobile-Tensaw Delta are considered by many outdoor enthusiasts to be Alabama’s hidden treasure.

Experts say it is one of the most-important deltas in the world and one of the few deltas in The United States such a variety of plant and animal life. It is also under constant threat from pollution, development and changes in the environment.

Efforts to protect the region and even have it included in the National Park System have come and gone through the decades.

A bill to include the region in a study to determine if it should be granted national park status has lingered since September in a House subcommittee. Both National Park System officials and advocates for the delta say it doesn’t appear the delta will become part of the federal park system anytime soon.
