Sam Jones appointed to MAWSS board

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Former Mobile Mayor Sam Jones has been appointed by the Mobile City Council to the Mobile Area Water and Sewer System Board.

The vote was 5-1, with Council Member Bess Rich voting against the appointment. John Williams was not at the meeting and did not vote. Five votes were needed to approve the nomination.

The city council had previously rejected Council Member Fred Richardson’s nomination not once, but twice.

Richardson went to bat for Jones.

Richardson said, “Whenever they bring their appointment to me, I’m supportive. I wouldn’t care if they had a blind dog. If you want to bring him down here and put him on, I’m voting for him. If that’s what you think is the best person you can find in your district, that’s all gone.”

Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson recently announced he fully supports the appointment.

At a news conference, Mayor Stimpson said there’s a rift in the Mobile City Council that could undermine all efforts to build a better Mobile.

The good news, he said, is that it can be repaired.

Stimpson said, “It starts with a single step, and that is approving the appointment of Sam Jones to the Mobile Sewer and Water Board. Today, I call on the city council to take that step.”
