Surveillance catches truck slamming into gas station

SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WALA) – The owner of Papa John’s Gas Station in Spanish Fort said surveillance video caught a truck smashing into his store.

It happened around 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 29.

In the video, you can see a truck at the top of the screen. The owner said the driver had just finished pumping gas and was about to leave.

He said as the driver got to the road the truck turns, appears to speed up and slams into the building.

The impact knocked down shelving and scattered merchandise everywhere.

The owner, Hemant Shukla, told Fox Ten News Thursday he feels like he’s lucky to be alive.

Shukla said he stepped away about a second or two earlier from the area where the car came through the building.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and rushed the driver to the hospital, where the owner said he passed away.

Authorities are investigating what may have caused the driver to go out of control.

They have not identified the driver.

The store was closed Thursday and Shukla says it will probably remain closed for a couple of days.
