MPD: Spice packaging is misleading

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Mobile Police say although the packaging spice comes in may seem harmless, and somewhat sophisticated, the product inside is anything but.

“People are still buying it and assuming that it’s safe,” said MPD Spokesperson Ashley Rains.

MPD said people who used to smoke synthetic marijuana when it was legal think because the packaging is the same, so is the drug. Some find out the hard way, that can’t be further from the truth. Investigators said what is inside the packets is more like meth than it is marijuana.

“It’s not what used to be brought in from overseas. The packaging looks very professional. But they are spraying whatever chemicals they want on these tea leaves and they are packaging that in the packets that they are buying online,” said Rains.

Investigators said some of this stuff is made in Mobile in people’s bath tubs and kitchens.

“It’s in the worst dilapidated places. Our narcotics officers have gone to places they don’t even want to walk into because they are so dirty,” said Rains.

Rains also said the new batch of spice is so strong, detectives now wear gloves just to handle the packets. This is after one detective had a bad reaction after touching a packet wrapped in plastic.
