Spanish Fort shuts out Cullman in game one

MONTGOMERY, Alabama – Spanish Fort’s seniors didn’t want a repeat of 2013.

Jesse McCord struck out 14 and Will Luft had three hits and three RBIs as the Toros beat Cullman 6-0 in Game 1 of the Class 5A championship series at Paterson Field.

Game 2 is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday. Game 3, if necessary, will follow at approximately 1.

McCord, a Mississippi State signee, pitched a complete game, allowing just four hits. He walked only one.
Luft led a 12-hit Toro attack.

Spanish Fort (38-6) scored single runs in the first and third innings and two runs each in the fourth and sixth.

“I thought the boys came out with the intensity they needed to play with,” Spanish Fort coach Brent Boyd said. “They played hard. They hit the ball. They made the plays when they needed to make them. It’s still a two or three-game series. We still have work to do, but I’m happy with the start.”

A year ago, Spanish Fort lost Game 2 of its championship series with Hartselle and ultimately the entire series.
The Toros will be going for their fourth state title in five years Saturday.
