Boating is such a huge part of the Gulf Coast lifestyle! It’s so much fun to get out on the water, but it can also be dangerous if you don’t follow certain safety rules.
Listen to this…101 people died in boating accidents along the Gulf Coast last year! 85% of those weren’t wearing a life jacket.
The Coast Guard wants to decrease that number as much a possible.
Ltjg. Bradley Parker joined us on Studio10 to talk about National Safe Boating Week. It runs May 17-23 and focuses on certain measures which have statistically been shown to increase boating safety.
Those things include: life jackets, flares, marine radio, a float plan, vessel safety checks and boating safety courses.
There will also be a kickoff to National Safe Boater’s Week at West Marine on Airport Blvd, this Saturday May 17. Active Duty/Auxiliary Coast Guard members will be present with safe boating material and will be able answer any questions as well as schedule courtesy vessel examinations.
