Drug suspect dies in jail

On May 11, 2014 at 830 p.m., Summerdale Police arrested Mark Karanick at Highway 59 and Couch Plant Road in Summerdale for DUI, possession of second-degree marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Karanick was transported to the Foley Police Department Jail and booked into that facility at 1 a.m. on May 12, 2014.

Karanick was provided breakfast and lunch and checked on throughout the day by Foley corrections officers. At approximately 5:20 p.m. on May 12, Karanick was found passed out and unresponsive in his jail cell. CPR was performed and paramedics responded and attempted to resuscitate the individual. Karanick was transported to the South Baldwin Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit was requested to investigate the incident and that investigation is underway.

There were no visible signs of trauma to the body and the official cause of death at this time is unknown pending an autopsy and toxicology reports.

Karanick was 52 years old.
