MAWSS retention wall gives way in recent rains

MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) – The Mobile Area Water & Sewer System said due to heavy rains, there was a breach in a wall of a retention pond.

The pond is being constructed on the grounds where a new maintenance center is being built for MAWSS. It’s located on Shelton Beach Road.

MAWSS said as a result, a home in the 1700 block of Northview Drive was flooded. They said the homeowners had previously filed a complaint about drainage issues related to the project.

Barbars Shaw with MAWSS said they are working with the homeowners and released the following statement:

“MAWSS is very concerned about what happened and for the couple whose home was impacted. This project is still under construction and we have told our contractor and engineering firm to make sure this issue is addressed immediately.”

The maintenance facility on Shelton Beach Road will centralize MAWSS Field Operations and move them closer to their customers and to their Moffett Road facility. The facility is designed to house major construction equipment, provide storage for equipment and construction material and a fleet maintenance facility. MAWSS anticipates having the building open in summer 2014.
