The 56th Annual Dauphin Island Race is set for this weekend!
This year’s race events will be held as always on the last full weekend of the month – April 25th -27th and are hosted by the Buccaneer Yacht Club and presented by ExxonMobil. Additional sponsors this year are Atlantic Gulf Bunkering, Evonik, Harbor Communications and Ross Maritime, with further support and hospitality from the Town of Dauphin Island and Pusser’s Rum.
The Dauphin Island Race remains one of the largest single point-to-point sailboat races in North America, with nearly 200 sailboats racing 18 nautical miles of beautiful Mobile Bay from north of Gaillard Island to the Dauphin Island Bridge.
Race weekend activities kickoff with a rowdy and informative Skipper’s Party on Friday night April 25th at the storied Buccaneer Yacht Club. Festivities begin around 6 pm with dinner from always fresh and tasty Smokin Gringos, live music in the Buc Bar from the incomparable Lisa Mills, and an absolutely essential Skipper’s Meeting at 8 pm.
Saturday’s races start at 9:30 and 9:45 with a 5:00 pm Time Limit for finishing.
The Island Raft-Up Party at the Dauphin Island Rodeo site starts around 3 pm with music from Steve Varnes & the Lizards, followed by the Seymour/Lively Rhythm & Soul Review with special guest Donna Hall.
The traditional Trophy Presentation is expected to start around 7:30/8:00 pm.
Return races on Sunday April 27th are scheduled to start at 10:00 am.
For those who want to come down to Dauphin Island early and enjoy the day, the Fifth Annual Dauphin Island Gumbo Festival is also livening up Dauphin Island from 11:00 – 3 pm on Saturday the 26th at three new locations around the main island. Trophy presentations for gumbo will be around 4 pm at the Water Tower site.
