Innocent driver killed during chase

FOLEY, Ala. (WALA) -Baldwin County authorities say a police chase turned deadly when a suspect crashed into an innocent motorist, Wednesday, April 16.

The Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office told FOX10 News Steven Little of Foley was driving erratically when he was spotted by an off-duty, undercover sheriff’s deputy.

Major Anthony Lowery said the chase began on Section Street, just east of Highway 59. According to Lowery, the deputy felt Little was endangering the public.

“He (the deputy) felt his driving was such a danger to the public he tried to stop him in an unmarked vehicle. He did call for assistance from other units.  At one point he did make contact with the driver told him he was under arrest for reckless endangerment,” Lowery said.

Investigators said Little didn’t pull over and marked law enforcement vehicles continued the car chase.

“I expected him to pull over at first because there were two cops behind him and I was watching them go down and figured he was on a high speed pursuit. What did it sound like? A shotgun going off,” a witness said.

The car chase ended at the corner of Azalea Avenue and Highway 59 where Little ran a red light and struck another car. The driver of that car was taken to South Baldwin Medical Center and pronounced dead.

After hitting the vehicle, Little’s Dodge hit a light pole, overturned and Little fled on foot. K-9 units and about half a dozen sheriff’s deputies pursued Little until he was apprehended.

Lowery said a deputy was bitten on the shoulder by one of the K-9 units and was taken to South Baldwin as well. Lowery said the deputy has been released from the hospital.

Lowery told FOX10 News Little was wanted on outstanding warrants by the Foley Police Department. Little is charged with manslaughter, attempting to elude and numerous other charges, all of which will go before a grand jury and could be upgraded to possibly murder or capital murder charges.

Investigators said the Foley Traffic Homicide Division will handle the vehicle wreck. The Major Crimes Unit is also involved in the investigation because of the chase.

The victim’s name as not been released pending family notification.
