PPD: 14-year-old runs stop sign, hits car with baby inside

PRICHARD, Ala. (WALA) – Prichard police said a baby was hospitalized after she was hurt in a two-car accident. Officials said the driver of one of the cars was 14-years-old.

The accident happened around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, April 10 near Victory Avenue and Owens Street. That’s in the Trinity Gardens community.

Prichard Police Chief Jerry Speziale said the teen ran a stop sign and hit a vehicle with the one-year-old girl inside.

Speziale said as officers arrived on the scene, the teen took off. Officers gave chase and some passersby helped nab him. He was taken into custody.

The chief said the baby suffered a head injury because she was not in a car seat. He said the driver of that car faces child abuse charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
