“Care House” is doing important work for children in Baldwin County. The non-profit group provides a safe haven for children who are victims of sexual and physical abuse. You can help Care House by spending a ‘Night Under the Stars’. Niki Whitaker and Claudene Nichols stopped by our studio to tell us more about Care House and the big fundraiser.
Care House is Baldwin County’s Child Advocacy Center. It works with a multi-disciplinary team which consists of partner agencies including DHR, law enforcement, the DA’s office, and medical and mental health. If a report is given to law enforcement or DHR that involves severe physical abuse, sexual abuse, or exposure to a violent crime, a referral is sent to Care House. Care House then does a forensic interview with the child. This way, the child can sit down with one person, as opposed to someone from every agency. The other agencies that need that information will participate through TV monitoring. Care House also provides services through counseling, advocacy for non-offending care-givers or victims, and prevention work through schools.
The big fundraiser, “A Night Under the Stars” is the 5th annual fundraiser. It will be on Friday, May 2nd from 6:30pm – 11pm. It is the center’s biggest fundraiser. It’s held at Oak Hollow in Fairhope each year. This year, The Modern Eldorados will perform. There will be a live auction, a silent auction, dinner, drinks, and other entertainment. 13-year-old Summerlyn Powers from Bayside Academy will also provide local entertainment.
April is a special month for Care House because it’s Child Abuse Prevention month. It’s a national event that is celebrated the entire month of April.
