PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) – Former Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd is objecting to the release of up to 50 letters written on his behalf to a federal judge before he determined earlier this month how to sentence the former sheriff on a federal charge of witness tampering.

Byrd maintains those who wrote letters on his behalf “had an expectation of confidentiality.”

Byrd’s attorney filed the motion in U.S. District Court in the Southern District of Alabama on Monday in response to a motion filed by the Sun Herald seeking the release of the letters.

The Sun Herald argues the public’s right to know how U.S. District Judge William H. Steele determined Byrd’s sentence.
