The Gulf Shores Police Department said charges against a driver who allegedly struck and killed college student Kasey Nicole Waychoff early Friday morning have been upgraded to Manslaughter and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

Justin Lott, 29, was initially charged with DUI but investigators said on Friday, March 21, further charges were pending in the case.  He is now being held in the Baldwin County Jail with no bond. Lott, said investigators, is from Montgomery, Ala.

The 19-year-old Oklahoma State University student died of her injuries at a Gulf Shores hospital early Friday morning.

Gulf Shores police said the incident happened in the 1400 block of West Beach Boulevard. Investigators said Waychoff was walking along the highway when she was hit by a pickup truck. Lawmen said Lott did not stop. Gulf Shores Police officials say a Baldwin County Sheriff’s deputy spotted Lott’s vehicle near Callaway Pass.

Lott was arrested and taken to the Gulf Shores City Jail.

Waychoff was from Flower Mound, Texas.

Relatives told FOX10News she and her friends chose Gulf Shores for spring break because they thought it was a safer place to be. Her grandparents said she was an active member of her sorority, Gamma Phi Beta and was studying International Relations and was learning Chinese.

Friends of Kasey Waychoff have placed a flower memorial at the site where she was struck by the vehicle.
