Deputy sobs after shooting Vet he thought had gun

Dash cam video shows a deputy sobbed with regret after he fired shots at a 70-year-old Vietnam veteran after he thought the man’s cane was a shotgun. The incident happened during a traffic stop in South Carolina.

In the dash cam video, the deputy, identified as Terrence Knox, calls out a warning before firing several shots at Bobby Canipe after Canipe got out of his truck during the traffic stop to retrieve what the deputy thought was a shotgun from the bed of his pickup.

“Drop the gun!” yelled Knox. Canipe responds. “It’s a walking stick.”

One bullet struck the veteran in the stomach, but according to officials he will survive.

The deputy, realizing his mistake,  hurries to help Canipe while apologizing, “”I am so sorry.”
