Middle school teacher charged with sex abuse

The Mobile County Public School spokesperson Nancy Pierce confirmed a 48-year-old man accused of sex abuse is an eighth grade social studies teacher at Calloway-Smith Middle School.

Mobile Police arrested Robert Alexander Friday, March 14 for first-degree sex abuse.

Investigators said the crime involves two adult men and emphasized no juveniles were involved. They do not believe Alexander knew the victim.

“It was not anyone targeting a juvenile or the small children that attend the facility,” said spokesperson for the Mobile Police Department, Terence Perkins.

Perkins said at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 a man reported another man “subjected him to unwanted sexual contact” at the YMCA on Water Street.

Investigators are being tight-lipped about what exactly happened but the CEO of the Downtown YMCA, Mark Hanke, said the sexual abuse reportedly happened inside the men’s locker room.

“It’s very very rare that this happens,” Hanke said.  “We were surprised this happened but at the same time, we acted very quickly getting it to the authorities.”

The Mobile County Public School System is not commenting on the matter at this time.
