The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Fort Walton Beach woman on charges she killed her newborn baby.
29 year-old Tonisha Crowell was booked into the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview around 1 a.m. Saturday. Investigators say Crowell went to an area hospital claiming she was having vaginal bleeding. According to investigators, she denied to doctors she had given birth. The hospital staff told deputies Crowell had been at the same hospital two days before for abdominal pain and underwent an ultrasound. Doctors said they told her she was 38 weeks pregnant.
OCSO deputies went to Crowell’s home where, they say, they found a seven pound baby girl in a white garbage bag in the woods near her town home. Lawmen said when they thought they saw the baby’s chest rise, the deputy began CPR. The baby was rushed to the hospital but died a few hours later.
According to deputies, Crowell told them she misled her family and boyfriend that she was pregnant. Furthermore, they say, Crowell told them she thought the baby was dead and never checked for a pulse or called 911.
Crowell has been charged with an open count of murder and aggravated child abuse.
