Monday, February 24 the Mobile County Commission voted on how to spend a nearly $2 million surplus from the 2013 budget. Commissioners voted to spend the bulk of the money on county employees.
When the county switches to a new insurance plan in March, workers will have two premium payments the first month. To compensate for that second payment, the commissioners voted to use the surplus to pay that second payment. They’re also giving county employees a $500 per person bonus.
The commission approved for $350,000 will go toward the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office to pay for increase expenses at Mobile County Metro Jail.
Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich has been asking for funds for several years to hire more prosecutors, but the money isn’t going to her department.
