The Baker HiQ academic team moved into first place in the 2014 HiQ standings Thursday, increasing its likelihood of securing a bye for the championship match.
Baker scored 50 points during the match at Blount High School, outscoring Bryant which earned 31 points and Blount which scored 17.
Baker unseated McGill-Toolen Catholic which held the top spot until today’s match.
The top scoring team out of the 15 high schools competing will meet the winners of a semi-final competition featuring the teams that finished second through seventh. Right now, McGill-Toolen Catholic is in second, followed by Bryant, Murphy, Davidson, Mary G. Montgomery. Theodore and Satsuma are tied for the seventh spot. Davidson and Mary G. Montgomery have yet to complete third round play, so the standings could still change.
The Alabama HiQ championship will take place at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza Hotel in downtown Mobile on March 25.
