MPD: Video game night turns dangerous, two shot

Mobile police want you to be careful if you plan to take a social media relationship to the next level.

Investigators said two men met through a social network and arranged to play some video games together. Instead, they both ended up shot and in the hospital.

When the victim arrived, police said, Phillip Tolbert pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim hand over his money.

MPD said Tolbert shot the victim. After a fight, however, the victim managed to take Tolbert’s gun and shoot him back.

It happened at French Quarter Apartments off Azalea Road January 25. Tolbert was arrested February 17.

Authorities said both the suspect and victim went to separate hospitals with the same story. MPD found evidence that matched the victim’s story and arrested Tolbert.

Mobile Police spokesperson Terence Perkins said if you meet someone on a social network and plan to take it a step further, be careful.

“Definitely meet in a public place where it is wide open and someone can be able to see what is going on,” said Perkins.
