The religious motto “In God We Trust” will soon be displayed in the Gulf Shores city hall.
It’s a saying that was adopted some 60 years ago as the National Motto for the United States.
It’s on every dollar bill you see, and soon it will be up at Gulf Shores City Hall.
The resolution to put the sign up was passed Monday, February 10, noting that the slogan is quote, “a profound source of strength and guidance to many generations of Americans,” and that it “express(es) confidence in our society.”
The City still hasn’t decided exactly where to put the sign. It could be in the council chambers, or somewhere else within city hall. But, the city council hasn’t even bought the sign yet. Once a purchase is made, then the city council will make a decision on a location.
The City of Orange Beach already has the motto displayed in their council chambers, and other municipalities across the country have done the same.
So now that Gulf Shores is following suit, FOX10 asked locals what they thought about it.
“I think it’s a great idea, because that’s what our country was based on,” said Steve Banks of Gulf Shores.
“I think it’s very important, I think that our whole world revolves around God, and you need God no matter what,” said Terri Lovell, also from Gulf Shores.
But, some feel it’s inappropriate to have a religious sign in a government building.
