MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The Mobile County Animal Shelter is over capacity, and officials are encouraging people to come out and adopt a pet.

Chief Humane Officer Carmelo Maranda said Wednesday, February 12 with his current staff of three workers, the facility reaches capacity at 70 dogs and 20 cats. Maranda said the shelter is already above that number.

Officials confirmed the recent seizure of more than 30 dogs and cats as well as 10 birds from a single home has contributed to the overcrowding. The shelter cannot adopt out seized animals until they are cleared through the court. That process could take weeks. However, other animals at the shelter can be adopted.

Maranda said if the animals are not adopted or turned over to an animal rescue group, the shelter is forced to euthanize the animals.

The shelter receives around 7,000 dogs and cats each year.
