An accident backed up I-65 near Saraland after a suspect running from police was hit and killed. The other suspect arrested. Fox10 News reporter Chasity Byrd went to Creola to see how the incident started.
Steven Jones has been booked into metro jail. Creola police said he is one of the two suspects involved in an incident, that left the other suspect dead.
Police said the whole thing started on Sailor Road, when the two suspects stole aluminum from someone they knew.
“We received a call from a gentleman that said some property had been stolen from a shop and that he was behind the vehicle and he was southbound on 65,” said Police Chief Jerry Taylor.
Taylor said once Creola police were alerted that the victim was following the suspects, Saraland and Satsuma police were called as backup.
“Prior to Saraland spotting the vehicle and stopping it the driver pulled over and allowed the passenger to get out on the interstate,” said Taylor.
That’s when state troopers said suspect Stevin Weaver tried to cross the interstate but was hit by a tractor-trailer. Chief Taylor couldn’t comment on that part of the investigation but said as far as the theft of property, Jones and Walker knew the victims.
“Mr. Jones had some type of relationship where he knew the victims and the victims were a specific target. They came up here for that purpose,” said Taylor.
Weaver was pronounced dead on the scene, Jones was stopped and taken to metro jail. We did speak to the victims who did not want to talk on camera about what happened.
